That is Great Model!
I was impressed.

But, I am disappointed.
There is no Val bombers on Akagi.
Only Kates and Zeros.

Why they didn't made Vals?

Konnichiwa M Washio Sama,
The 1/96 model of AKAGI at the Arizona Memorial Visitor's Center was built by a distinguished modeler at the US Naval Museum, Washington Navy Yard, Washinton DC.

He asked me to supply info on the aircraft he intended to use. I told him that it would be a historical error to show D3A "Bakugekiki" AND B5N "Kogekiki" together on Agaki IF he intended to depict the "Shinjuwan Sakusen".

The First wave launch only had A6M "Reisentoki", B5N "Kogekiki" (high-level) and "Raigekiki"  (torpedo). The Second wave launch only had A6M and D3A. Wakarimas?
Best wishes,

Wakarimas*ita Moderator Aiken.

Then the Vals of first wave was launch from other Aircraft carriers?

And, I believed ,the first launched plane from Akagi was Lt. Commander Shigeru Itaya's AI-101 Zero.
But, AI-155 Zero tries to take off from the model of Akagi.
Is this my mistake, too?

Aloha Masahiro,
Aireview magazine in 1965-67 produced a nice series on Japanese Naval aviation tail markings. Within this series are several side views of noted aircraft. One of these was AI-101 "flown by Lt Comdr Shigeru Itaya" leader of the first wave Zeros at Pearl Harbor, with two yellow stripes on the tail for a Buntaicho (squadron leader).

The photos of AI-101 do NOT show any command stripes. This caused a huge puzzle. Second wave leader of a unit of D3A VALs is Zenji Abe. He paused for a photo by Zero AI-105 in route to his bomber and in the background is AI-101...a second wave plane.

This meant the pilot was not Itaya but from the second wave. My fellow researchers, M. Asano and H. Yoshimura, showed these photos to Saburo Shindo, second wave leader of all Zeros, he knew that it was not his plane. On showing the photos to Tadao Kimura. Shindo's wingman, he jumped as he recognized himself. For years he thought he had flown another plane, but "Kodochosho" documents assured us that the plane MUST be Kimura's or the number three wingman to Shindo. Thus the late Tadao Kimura flew the Zero AI-101, not as illustrated in 1965-67 Airview series.

Aloha Moderator Aiken,

I understand ,And I admired your knowledge.

I looked for E-mail from former you, and read it again.
I was received it on August 3, 2000.
The photo of added to E-mail,AI-101 doesn't have command stripes.

I was deceived by 1/48  Type21 of of the TAMIYA model.
MARUSHIN die-casting model is accurate.

By the way ,Moderator Aiken,

I think that 1/96 Akagi model is diorama of when the first wave launch.

In that case, that AI-155 Zero is Lt Comdr Shigeru Itaya.
Is the number AI-155 correct?
Or, is it estimation?

Aloha Masahiro,
AI-155 is best estimate of researcher K Osuo.

Aloha Moderator Aiken,

I understand ,
But do you know why was Lt Comdr Shigeru Itaya's tail No (AI-101)memorized by mistake?

I imagine a certain possibility.
Lt Comdr Shigeru Itaya was use AI-101, but Before Shinjuwan sakusen ,He got a new airplane.
So He change his airplane New one.
But, an old memory was left.
This is my imagination.
