Hi Larry,
That is the main mast of the U.S.S. Nevada after she had beached herself.  The forward part of her is obscured by the fireball of the U.S.S. Shaw exploding.  This picture was taken north of the seaplane ramp, looking towards the drydocks around 0930.  The explosion of the Shaw's magazines got everyone's attention in the area.

This was when we learned to off-load ammo while a ship is in dry-dock, yes?

Larry,

This photo was taken just as Shaw exploded.  The mainmast (fighting top) to which you refer belongs to Nevada, which had just beached on Hospital Point.  Note that the ship is facing back up into the harbor, as she has swung around in the outgoing current.  View was taken from NAS Ford Island looking west across the channel.

I will get you the NARS negative number tonight.

Best regards,

Larry,
As to the question about the fighting top, no, it is not the Tennessee.  As far as ships in Pearl that day, that mast configuration was only on the Oklahoma and Pennsylvania classes, which would include Pennsylvania, Arizona, Oklahoma and Nevada.  In that particular photo it is the Nevada.  The sometimes confusing thing about that view is that since the photo was taken from Ford Island, Isn't the ship pointed in the wrong direction?  The answer to that is no.  The picture was taken late in the attack and the Nevada has already made her attempt to depart the channel.  To avoid bottling up the harbor, she was run aground at Hospital Point and due to the out going tide, has swung around to nearly pointing back up the channel.
There you go.

Best Regards,
Brian

Gentelmen,

In a few different publications that I have, photographs show what appears to be the remnants of a OS2U Kingfisher on board the Maryland. The photographs show a float mounted on top of the number 3 turret. Did the Maryland have a Kingfisher on board the morning of the attack?

Regards,

Lance Kuhn

Hi Lance,
I was aboard the Maryland and our OS2U Kingfishers were ashore at Ford Island.  What you see in the picture is just the extra pontoon mounted on top of the Catapult.

Thank you very much for the reply. It will be duely noted in my personal information that Maryland's Kingfishers were at Ford Island the morning of the attack and not aboard.

Hi, all!

According to David's list, there were nine OS2U's lost from battleship VO units plus one assigned to USS Curtiss (BuNo 2199). What happened to rest of the battleship and seaplane tender OS2U's. Were they damaged or were they airborne after the attack like the one from USS Maryland that was lost.

I'm also trying find info about SOC/SON planes at Pearl during the attack.

Sincerely,

Janne J. Honkala

Hi Janne,
Only the two OS2Us cited got in the air. The pilot of the USS Pennsylvania OS2U was a co-worker of mine in 1983! What stories he had to tell.

The USN "Expended Aircraft" reports are missing the SOC/SON information. I, too, seek more on these.

Two SOCs from USS St. Louis got in the air from waters just south of Ford Island after the attack to follow and attack one VAL!

Two more SOCs from USS Northampton [part of the USS Enterprise Task Force] were attacked just north of Kauai by a Japanese Zero [Combat Air Patrol] and all three were damaged.

Friends,

It appears that two Kingfisher VO squardons were assigned to the battleships on Dec 7th:

VO-1:

USS Arizona:              1-O-1, 1-O-2 and 1-O-3,

USS ???? :                 1-O-4,1-O-5, and 1-O-6

USS Maryland:            1-O-7, 1-O-8, and 1-O-9.

VO-2:

USS Tennesse :          2-O-1, 2-O-2 and 2-O-3

USS California:            2-O-4, 2-O-5 and 2-O-6

USS ?????:                 2-O-7, 2-O-8 and 2-O-9

I'm sure somebody already figured this out I just need to know personally. A pint on me the next time the winner comes out to LA!

Keep the Faith!
Leonardo
