Aloha all,
I just signed up for this messageboard on the recommendation from David Aiken. Looking forward to discussing with you all.
My first post will be somewhat of a "I need some help" direction.
I'm currently doing some research for a script and I wonder if anyone could provide any background information on George Welch and Ken Taylor. Basically what they did before and during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I know they were two amongst five pilots who got up in the air and managed to shot down nine enemy planes. If you could also provide information on the three other pilots I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

If you can, you might look for "Forgotten Defenders of Pearl Harbor" by Ron Darcy, which was published in the Janurary 2002 "Aviation History." My local library does not carry it so I'm not sure what luck you will have finding it other than an inter library loan. Also, I don't see any back issues info but www.thehistorynet.com is the web site of the publisher.

The article gives an overview of what happened December 7th to American pilots. As a basic overview, it misses some pilots and is vague in details at points but it is a good point to start. Welch and Taylor were stationed at Wheeler, I believe. Most of the aircraft there were destroyed quickly and the two set off to Haleiwa field in a car.

The were the first of two groups of pilots to arrive and as such, they took the two newer aircraft, P-40B's. The two shot down 5 aircraft between them over Ewa before landing and refueling at Wheeler. Back in the air they shot down three more with one probable.

That's as much information as the article gives.

Another possibility for information is a republication of "7 DEC 1941: THE AIR FORCE STORY" by Leatrice Arakaki and John Kuborn. You can find an online version at this Illinois Institute of Technology page.

Unfortunately my cable modem is down tonight and I don't have a good ability to peruse the large PDF's (four of them totaling about 12 megabytes) for you and I'm not sure how much info they will provide.

Let's see what this does...

Aloha Ryan,
I preferred not to respond to that article, however when cornered...

Six enemy went down to two Americans.

My text is not yet written, so I do not wish to compromise anything more.
Cheers,
David

David,

Sorry about it. I just am now wondering if I can recommend the article to people like I have in the past...  ???  :)  Oh well. I don't want to compromise you're work, so I'll just leave that article alone as well!

Eagerly anticipating the sight of whatever work you're doing that may be published in the future.
