I have only seen the new film twice, but the only cigarette I
saw was a brief shot of President Roosevelt. You briefly saw
one burning in an ash tray near him.

I had three uncles who served in the Navy during the war.
The youngest  joined at age 16, he lied about his age, right after
Decemember 7th. He was in the Navy 20 years.

They all came out of the war smoking Camels or Luckies and
drinking black coffee.

Compared to the 1943 film Casablanca, was  the omission of any character(s)
smoking done to make the more socially acceptable or PC?

What do you think?

Sure it was. Look at the current commercial playing for some car company talking about bringing the future to people too soon... they're showing off a modern car to 1940's looking people.. the reporters are a nice homogonized crowd of men and women of all races. How many female reporters were there back then? Maybe a couple, but like anything else, historical correctness is seen through the filters of modern attitudes.
