The thing is Holywood's job is to entertain, not to be accurate.

Tora Tora Tora might be a fovorite with historians, but it lost money at the box office. It wasn't because people had some Viet Nam aversion to war films, Patton was released the same year and it made money and won Oscars, Holywood's two marks of sucess.

Some of the complaints I see about accuracy are just nit-picking. "One of the Ribbons Adm Kimmel wore was incorrect" that sort of thing. Personally I think worrying about that kind of detail is counterproductive, it makes film makers less likely to contact historians.

Other things might be needed to make the story flow better such as merging the roles played by several people who had a very minor role in the story. That makes it easier for the layman to follow, and it isn't something that bothers me.

I really only get upset when they are inaccurate out of sloppiness, when a little effort could have resulted in greater historic accuracy without interfering with Holywood's primary objective to make a film that is entertaining enough to make a profit.

The truth is if our schools did a better job of teaching history, then inaccurate Holywood movies wouldn't matter. That is the real failure.
