Navy Historical Center (NHC) photograph of a painting showing nine of the ten midget submarine crewmen. The text below is the NHC's online caption for the photo.

Wartime painting in oils on silk, by an unidentified Japanese artist, depicting the four officers and five crewmen who were lost with the five Japanese midget submarines that participated in the attack. The single survivor of that effort is omitted from the painting, which features a view of the attack on Ford Island in its center.

According to "Attack on Pearl Harbor" by Stan Cohen (with contributing authors Ernest Arroyo, Robert Bracci, David Aiken, and Paul Bender), the names to go with this photograph are (left to right, working clockwise):

Petty Officer 1st Class (PO1) Yoshio Katayama, PO1 Naoshi Sasaki, PO1 Shigenori Yokoyama, Sub Lieutenant Masaji Yokoyama, Lieutenant Naoji Iwasa, Sub Lieutenant Shigemi Furuno, Ensign Akiro Hirowo, Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2) Sadamu Ueda, and PO2 Kioshi Inagaki. Ensign Kazuo Sakamaki is not shown, since he was captured alive.

There are variations on the names, mostly due to translations. "Japanese Monograph 102," written after the war by surviving Imperial Japanese Navy officers, also contains the list of names of each of the ten men, along with the midget submarine they were assigned to.

Hi Ken,

In reading this post of yours, you mentioned "Japanese Monograph 102," written after the war by surviving Imperial Japanese Navy officers, also contains the list of names of each of the ten men, along with the midget submarine they were assigned to"

Do you have this document?  If so, when you say "along with the midget submarine they were assigned to" do they give a "HA" ID number for each midget?

Hello.

No, Monograph 102 doesn't give the hull number of the midgets, but rather the mother submarine to which they were assigned.

You probably can read a copy of it in "The Pearl Harbor Papers" at your local library.
