I watched "War Stories with Oliver North: Attack Of The Japanese Midget Subs!" and thought it was generally a good show. It featured interviews with Ken Swedberg from Ward and William Tanner, the pilot of the PBY that also attacked the sub as well as some other Pearl Harbor attack survivors.

Burl couldn't advance his theory of a second sub in the harbor too much but it was mentioned (he did have to mention that the USS Raleigh was fired on outside the harbor as another possibility for the last sub at least). There were one or two goofs that I can't remember now (I think they were during interviews though and not during the statements of facts), and Ollie definitely has a crew who pumps the dramatic up, but there wasn't any slant from the programming view, just some decent background info and interviews.

I'm sure Ken can correct me if there's anything wrong as he's much more versed in them than I.

PS, I thought I saw a crack in the hull of the midget when they were going over the HURL footage.. I'll have to watch the tape again tonight to see.

One thing I thought to add; if I recall the show implied that Fuchida planned the attack and lead it; no mention was made of Genda.

Tracy,

I had a meeting to attend that night and did not see the Ollie North show. I'd set my VCR to tape it, but since I did it myself rather than having a child do it, the thing did not work.  I am hoping someone taped it so I can at least watch it before it shows in reruns next year.

Tracy,

Everyone knows about the St Louis reporting two different torpedo attacks as she left the channel that morning,

but

the Indy was the other cruiser that reported a torpedo attack outside the harbor (along with a DD named the Aylwin) that morning. áThe Raleigh was badly damaged during the attack and did not leave Pearl that morning. The Indy was not in the harbor when the attack began, but was underway south of Oahu for training.

The Aylwin report went into a little detail on that attack, which it makes it almost certain that the attack was dolphins or imagination rather than an actual torpedo attack.

If someone mentioned the Raleigh outside Pearl Harbor on December 7, it was probably in error - perhaps simple confusion over ship names.

Tracy,

The tape arrived this morning in the mail and I watched it.

Our buddy Burl mentioned the St Louis as she left the channel that morning, not the Raleigh, so that's cool.  He made a number of comments that I would argue, but since it is Burlingame, I'm not going to bother.  Overall the show was somewhat sensationalist, but reasonably accurate.  I wish they'd spent a few more minutes on the midget submarines themselves rather than spending so much time on other topics, such as the air attack or the overall planning. It was, after all, a show about the midget submarines.

I'm not going to complain to much though, since it was one of the few shows (or books) that managed to be pretty accurate.

The Raleigh was my goof =P

Agree with your sentiments. They were tending towards the dramatic but it was good to see the topic get good cover.
