I was at the annual Pearl Harbor lunch held up here in the Twin Cities today, and at my table was a USS Oklahoma vet and a USS Maryland vet.
I asked the Okie vet about the number of torpedoes that hit the ship, noting that it seemed to me to be a matter of controversey.
He told me anywhere from five to ten hit the ship (and that after five hit, he got off, of course.)
Is this so?
Thanks!

Richard

Aloha Richard,
The names of each pilot, number of torpedoes and the order in which they hit, the number of 'no run' torpedoes, and much more are in my "Torpedoing Pearl Harbor",  Military History magazine, Dec 2001. Primedia Publications The article may be obtained through their back issue department at: (800)358-6327

Thus you may know that of the twelve torpedoes intended for that ship only nine hit their target. You will be able to read the words of the first pilot who hit the USS Oklahoma and the last!

John DeVirgilio, also a PHHA Director, did a detailed drawing series showing the stages of roll as each of the nine torpedoes hit Okie, and hit where, in his "Japanese Thunderfish", Naval History magazine, Winter 1991 issue. This is based on an advance copy of the "Torpedoing..." article which was first printed as "The Search for Five Hirohito Messengers" in Maru (Japanese) magazine, March 1992.

Hope this helps,

--------------
