Just a little detail for those interested I ran across recently. BB-45 Colorado and BB-46 Maryland were testing possible replacement for teak decks at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Maryland had  606 square feet of Angelique wood on the superstructure deck level between frames 75 and 87. A report I found dated July 23, 1941 states that the angelique wood is slightly darker than the adjacent teak decking. If I recall however, Maryland was one of the ships with a painted deck at the time of the attack.

Tracy,

The only two battleships at Pearl Harbor with stained decks as of 7Dec41 were Tennessee and Nevada. áMaryland did NOT have her decks painted, as the 10 Dec aerial aftermath photography shows very clearly.

Although I am not 100% positive regarding regarding the status of Oklahoma and Arizona, every veteran I have ever contacted said that their decks were NOT painted. áThere is an aerial of Oklahoma from the late November time frame that would seem to support that supposition, but there is no equivalent image of Arizona, at least of which I am aware.
