Does anyone know who were the eleven sailors that walked aboard the sinking Arizona and closed the hatch?  My father Leo William Smith was one of those men.  Are there any survivors who can retell that momemt?

Thanks,

Jim Smith

I've never heard of this before Jim, could you give us some more details? Do you know where they came aboard from, and what hatch (there were many) that they closed?

Jim-

I too have never heard of this story of eleven men going aboard the Arizona and closing a hatch.

According to my records, your father wasn't attached to the Arizona. Am I correct in this? Would he have been part of the party sent aboard the ship from the Hoga to help extinguish fires?

Besides that group, the only other set of individuals that I know of that went aboard the Arizona were Lt. K.S. Masterson, and Ens. L. Grabowsky later on around sunset to lower her colors (flag).

Regards!
Chris

So sorry that I had forgotten about this question.

My father was actually going to submarine school at the time eventually assigned to the Sea Dragon.

That morning, he was working in the mess hall when all hell broke loose.  He was told to board the Widgeon and help with rescue operations.  Later that morning, they were told to board the Arizona's deck still above the water line and do a ceremonial closing of the hatch to honor those that had perished in the ship.

My father has since passed away but he did not know any of the other 10 men he was with.

This is really all I know about it.  He recieved an award from Senator David Durenburger (MN) for his actions in the late 1990's.
