I was watching the History Channel a week ago and they were airing a documentary called "Wake Island:  The Alamo of the Pacific."  In the documentary they state that Noboru Kanai who "sank the Arizona at Pearl Harbor" was killed in this engagement.

From everything I've read by Mr. David Aiken this is not entirely correct. Was Noboru Kani even a member of Lt Cmdr Kusumi's group?

This is a key inflection point in Modern History.  I also noted that according to Mr. Virgilio's paper 582 tons of 14" ordanance was consumed in the blast.  I now understand why that blast is still remembered today.

My the way.  This is my first post and this Board is an incredible historical resource for those children of the Greatest Generation.

Aloha Gibbonsm,
You may use your real name here...we are family...

Kanai was a navigator-bombardier from the Soryu high level Kate unit. The target of Kanai was the paired WeeVee-Tenn.

Kanai left a diary which became widely known about.

Dr Prange did not access the diary and had assumed too much!

Thank you for your kind words about the folk who help with responces...some moderate, yet there are many who just respond and really have good points!
HTH,
David Aiken

Aloha and welcome aboard! We do prefer to at least use a first name in order to have an easygoing experience here, so I apologize for not knowing how to refer to you!

Ahhhh the history channel. Both a bane and a blessing. Much of the programming is developed by people who have no real interest in history, or at least a passing interest. Fact checking is typically a weakness and they very, very seldomly run scripts past us ;)

My wife rolls her eyes whenever she sees a pearl harbor program come on as she knows I'll be yelling corrections at the TV soon  :D

Case in point, I was watching "Great Military Blunders" a couple of nights ago and they kept stating that FDR declared war on Japan. They even played the snippet where Roosevelt ASKED CONGRESS to declare war but still stated that HE was the one that declared war.

Mike, about four years ago I found this site while doing some research on the Arizona. Look where I am today; if I can learn, anyone can!  :D

The source of the Kanai myth is the body of Prange material from Lieutenant Heijiro Abe.  Abe (Not to be confused with Zenji Abe!) was a braggart and a wingbag according to MANY of his contemporaries, all of whom have told me that, "He wasn't as good as he thinks he was!"

Prange's great problem (and I have touched upon this elsewhere) is that he was NOT a military historian, and thought of the attack itself as something of a sideshow to much bigger historical questions.  His handle on how the attack actually unravelled was quite minimal.  Ditto that for Goldstein.

Historians are only now beginning to understand this event for what is was.  Thank heavens, military historians have taken hold of the Pearl Harbor high ground, which before now was held by the academic generalists- who don't care about the details- and the rivet-counters- who don't understand how to make details relevant.  There are going to be some very good works on the attack coming out in the wake of the 65th.  Be patient!
