First off, I must say what an awesome site you guys/gals have here!  I stumbled onto this quite by accident.  This has got to be the best war forum I have ever visited!

My question:

I read somewhere that there was only one short movie clip of color footage shot during the actual attack on Dec 7.  I know that it is supposedly lost due to the ravages of time.   Can anyone tell me more details about the clip.  What exactly did it show, how long was it, who shot it, etc. etc!  Is the rumor that the producers of Tora, Tora, Tora offered $ 1 million to find it true?

Also, were there any color still photographs taken during the actual attack on Dec 7?  How many, where can they be viewed,  details - etc, etc?   If there were none taken during the attack, were any taken after the attack, showing the aftermath ?

The whole color issue fascinates me with regards to documenting the Pearl Harbor attack.  I would like to know what exists out there!  I apologize if this question has been asked before, I didn't see it in recent threads!

Thanks, everyone!

-Patrick

Of interest to your question, Patrick...

There are three different movie cameras which caught the USS Arizona explosion.

1) The famous B&W Movietone clip with the assistant cameraman's finger point "reel one" just as the ship exploded. This is was 'supposedly taken' by Movietone cinematographer Al Brick, but he did not! This is located at the University of South Carolina in the Movietone archive.

2) the COLOR 8mm footage taken from USS Solace by Eric Haakenson, an Army Doctor (visiting the ship). This is from where the stills came that National Geographic and others have used. This is archived at the Library of Congress. BEST VIEW of the actual bomb just a frame before it hit.

3) a VERY short clip made from a Japanese B5N KATE caught the explosion at a distance. This is stored at the National Archives and Records Administration.

A 16mm color film (two reels) was found in 1982 at NARA that shows the USS Nevada sortie and more NEW stuff! ...filmed by Photographers Mate First Class Clyde Daugherty from USS Argonne during the attack. It has nothing on the USS Arizona explosion. This film had sadly gone to monochromatic red. Clips from this film is in the documentary: http://www.timelessmusic.com/DVDs/pearlharbor_39.htm

There IS a missing color reel from the attack which disappeared from NARA in 1966 (retiring archivist is suspected)....it is NOT the two 1980 reels. NARA has waived any prosecution just to get a COPY!

Additionally, there is a lot of unknown film at NARA and elsewhere. There is color footage taken on Arizona before the attack on Scott Freund's Arizona Reunion Association website.

Let's see what this does...
