This is not meant to be a what if scenario, but simply a request to understand what would been different from a U.S. preparedness between Sunday and Monday. Had the Japanese elected to attack on Dec 8th instead of December 7th, what would have been different. Were the patrols outside Pearl more active or less active on a Monday morning, were there more ships scheduled for patrolling. If so what ships. Did the air wings have a different schedule on Monday's vs. Sunday's.  For the anchored ships, did Monday's bring a different morning schedule. Were any ships scheduled to depart  and if so, what was the schedule. I read that many BB's were preparing for inspections, what time would that have been.  Did Kimmel's and Short's staff have different schedules.

I'm, interested to see the differences. Thanks for any of your help.

I see no one has answered your post. Although I am far from the most qualified or knowledgeable, I will give it a try.
Essentially, despite the war warning Admiral Kimmel followed a very PREDICABLE schedule. The fleet would go out on Monday and return on Friday.
Many officers had overnight leave, and enlisted men  on leave did not have to be back until midnight, and could sleep late if not on duty.
It meant the perfect day for an attack would be early on a Sunday morning. BTW, the Enterprise had been scheduled to arrive on Saturday, and it was only because of storm delays that she was not in port on Dec. 7.

There's a couple of different scenarios. If they had struck later on December 7th more sailors would have been awake and on their ships, but more ships would have been in port. Had they struck early Monday there would have been more ships but also more men awake, with steam in the boilers. Later in the day on Friday would have seen the various groups deploying for exercises, so less ships in harbor, but those that were would be fully manned & ready, etc.

Let's see what this does...

The one BB that was "opened up" was prepared for an inspection starting at 0800. That's why they removed the void covers on Friday (and to allow for airing, of course.)

Releive  Kimmel from PH command....yes...but If only Kimmel had been kept in command of at least the relief Force for Wake Island instead of Fletcher or Pye....prehaps Wake would have had to been abandoned.......but to retreat without even engaging the IJN in a sea battle......

Do you remember the forces on each side? I don't have that handy, sorry.

Thanks. I'll have to look at the links in the morning. Getting late here right now.
