(FROM THE ARCHIVES OF THE USS ARIZONA & PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED MESSAGE BOARD - 10/12/99)
The burials for 7 Dec are at the National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) in Honolulu unless the family decided on another cemetery closer to home such as the family plot or a military cemetery near home.
If the person was missing on USS Arizona or USS Utah they are considered buried at their duty station. If a person was in turret #2 of USS Arizona which was salvaged in 1943 the human remains of which are now interred at Punchbowl as "unknown".
Several "unknown" were recovered from other ships and buried at Punchbowl. Of interest, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association with members of the Pearl Harbor History Associates Inc. and the USS Arizona Reunion Association have pooled data and checked existant documents. The result is that many "unknown" can be identified by ship or base and a few "unknown" may be able to be identified!
The National Cemetery of the Pacific is having a review of the records used in this ID project to possibly disinterr an unknown for DNA matchup. Congressional influence is sought to forge ahead with such DNA disinterrments. I can not do this for everyone but Susan send me the name of your deceased and I'll check with these above cited records for the Punchbowl burial plot number.
