While watching the golf channel last night, they have a show called the Natalie Gulbis show, she is a professional golfer about 25 years old. While in a tournament in Hawaii, she visited the Arizona Memorial with her father, and they were hosted by Dan Martininez. While at the Memorial she asked a few general questions, the one that stuck out , was " how many women were lost on board", to which the answer was none, the girl looked lost by the response. Until Dan explained that only in the past few decades have women been allowed to serve onboard ships. Following the boat ride back to shore, she also asked why so many brothers died on the ship. Again , it was explained it was very common for family members to serve together. Dan then went on to explain how the Sullivan brothers tragedy changed that practice to this day. All in all a nice little segment on what is really just another reality type show.

Hi all,

Although these were generalized questions, Mr. Martinez's "expertise" I have found to be questionable in the past.  I have heard from Pearl Harbor Survivors that he will actually argue with them in regard to their recollections vs. "his knowledge", or blow them off completely.  I remember a Discovery or History Channel program a couple of years ago where he argued in favor of the "5th mini-sub" firing at BB row in the captured Japanese photo.  I have long ago determined that this was an impossibility...I guess I assumed his position came with expertise.  I think of him as more of a TV star now.

Jon- I would have to agree with you for the most part.

Yes, Dan does "beg to differ" with some of the survivors as to their memories, but then again at 90 years of age, some of their memories are starting to fade, or have been blured with what they have seen or heard over the years. Like one survivor of Schofield Barracks told me that he rememered seeing the Arizona blow up. Now we all know that that is physically impossible. I'm not sure that if over time, watching footage of the attack slowly overtakes their actual memory or what. I know what I am trying to say in my head, its just not making it onto the keyboard.

As far as his "5th midget sub" firing on BB Row and the West Virginia/Oklahoma...I'm not going to go there. I'd spend all day long arguing about that.

A side note , Dan was in Washington DC on Sept 11, 2001 and was scheduled to be on American Airlines Flight 77 that took off from Washington Dulles International Airport heading to Los Angeles International Airport, but was delayed and couldn't make the flight that took off at 8:20.....only to crash into the Pentagon at 9:37 that morning.

Regards!
Chris

Hi Chris,

I didn't realize that Dan was so close to becoming part of "our 2nd Pearl Harbor".   I would agree with the idea that memories do fade.
I would say that from everything I have seen...the subs and/or their torpedoes were all accounted for.
The missing 5th sub, from accounts I have seen, fired her torpedoes outside the harbor at USS ST. LOUIS, which was confirmed by USCG reports at Barber's Point with an explosion reported on the coral reef.  Since Sakamaki's sub, the sub found in 1960, and the WARD's sub all had both of their torpedoes, and the MONAGHAN's sub fired both on Carrier Row ships, this would cover all torpedoes from 5 subs.   Without attempting to open any arguments, is my info correct?

I haven't heard that the USCG confirmed the strikes on the coral reef; what was the source? Personnel attesting to seeing it or a survey done later? Is there a report I can cite?

Tracy,

My knowledge of the "5th sub" attack was from the Action Report of USS ST. LOUIS.  I don't remember where I read a Coast Guard confirmation...but will start looking.  It is not in St. LOUIS' report.

I'd appreciate it.. whether or not one follows the midget attack on battleship row seems to essentially boil down to whether one believes the St. Louis Crew or the photograph... if there was another report separate of St. Louis that would be very helpful.

Tracy,

Here is the link I found on the Aerospaceweb.org report from a mathmatical possibility of a 5th sub attack on BB Row.

http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/hydrodynamics/q0280a.shtml

While this does mention the ST. LOUIS report...it does NOT mention independent confirmation from USCG sources...still not sure where I saw that!

Regards,

Hi all,

It is also notable that the ST. LOUIS action reports of both December 10 and 25 1941 record the torpedo attack, and on the report on the 25th the ship's CO positively identified the periscope of a "Baby Sub".
