Special thanks to Don Schaaf for this info regarding the shuttle boat ride around Ford Island:
"This has always been a very popular. A U.S. Navy shuttle boat, (the type used to transfer visitors from the visitors center to the memorial) leaves the visitors center and is piloted around Ford Island, with a continual commentary by a Lead Park Ranger. The usual LPR's, Skip Wheeler and Terry Dorman do an excellent job of commenting and pointing out different details about the attack during the tour.
The boat only holds 150 people, so reservations have to be made ahead of time (2-3 days). I would think, however, that someone from the mainland who really wanted to take the tour could get their name put on the list somewhat ahead of time by calling the Visitors Center (808) 422-2771 or by writing - National Park Service, 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, HI 96818, and simply asking that their name be put on the list for that ride. The person writing would have to specify what time for the boat ride, but I do not believe those times have been settled upon as yet.
There are two or three such "around Ford Island" tours on Memorial Day, there may be more this year."
Hope this helps. Thanks again Don for the info!
