(FROM THE USS ARIZONA & PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED MESSAGE BOARD 4/1/00)

Just wanted to tell what I found amony my Dad's things.  I thought it was interesting.  It's a type written "rough summary of Medical Departments Duties performed before during & after action" on the Nevada on Dec. 7 1941.  It starts with a time list at 0801-Condition zed set (whatever that means) to 1045-Ship grounded on western side of channel Bouy#9 15 yards off starboard bow.  Has a list of major hits Officers dead & injured.

I am wondering if this was handed out to all the men that were aboard on that day.  The papers are pretty old.  3 pages long.  It ends with telling the men where they could find clean cloths showers etc.  This is the part that leads me to beleive it was handed out soon after the attack.

"beginning on Dec.13, 450 men will be retained to man guns.  Transfers are effective daily".

There is much more in these papers. Anyone ever see this?  David & Chris what are your thoughts on this?

(FROM THE ARCHIVES OF THE USS ARIZONA & PEARL HARBOR REMEMBERED MESSAGE BOARD - 4/3/00)

Hi Joan,

Gosh you have a nice "find"! The Nevada's commander's 10 page report was written on 15 Dec 1941.  Anything written earlier perhaps may be division reports within the ship upon which the ship's captain based his report. Yours may be that very thing from your description.

In the first wave one torpedo hit USS Nevada then the high level bombers missed the Nevada due to smoke from the USS Arizona. She was attacked by many dive bombers during her sortie in the second attack wave. Anything which would suppliment the commander's report may help determine details of that dive bomber attack.

In Paul Stillwell's volume on the attack, a focus of several interviews and reports about the USS Nevada tried to add more about this famous sortie but little details are still to be resolved.  Your document may complete this aspect.  Details within your document may benefit future writing. Send copys to the US Naval Museum Washington Navy Yard Washington DC and to the National Archives II at College Park MD thus the narrative history is preserved for our future generations.

Sincerely,

David Aiken

Condition ZED is put into effect at General Quarters (or any other time the CO wants it) and all watertight doors are secured. You better get to your battle station FAST when GQ is sounded or you won't be able to get there if you are below deck.
