Kazuo Sakamaki's story has been documented and told over and over. But what do we really know about Inagaki's? Very little info has been written about him. I haven't picked up Burlingame's revised "Advance Force: Pearl Harbor", but in the first copy he wrote (1992), he lists various possible causes of death for Inagaki. Sharks...too close to a bomb dropped on the sub...he held an exposive charge to his mid-section...and even there was a report that he was shot in the back of the head.

But what bothers me is that Burls states that Inagaki's forensic death certificate is still classified by the US. Is this true? Now I know the government does strange and odd things...but keeping this under wraps, what could that possibly do.

ANd what about his burial there in Hawaii? Where did that take place?

Regards!
Chris

A lot of stuff stays classified simply due to bureaucratic inertia. Maybe a FOIA would be in order? I'd be willing to chip in for the cost....

Tracy-
FOIA wouldn't be a bad idea. But I wouldn't have the slightest clue as to where to begin with something like that. Maybe in the future when I have more time.

Chris,

The cover letter to the SUBRON 4 report on the recovery of Midget C states that Inagaki's body was found a day later washed up on the beach. It does not cite a cause of death, although I suppose one may infer drowning since that is what one would expect based on Sakamaki's book.

He said that both he and Inagaki left the midget submarine and the demolition charges failed to explode (which we know to be true since they were found intact in the boat). Sakamaki then says Inagaki was "swept away" by the waves. Given the state of exhaustion of both men, drowning seems to be the logical cause of death.

If you do happen to locate any other information in your search I would like to see it sometime.
