Saw Nova last night-this thread describes it all:
http://www.worldaffairsboard.com/naval-f....ub.html

Only Questions I have are:
1) If this sub's 1 torpedo was a "dud"  {Nimitz testimony on recovered 1,000 pd torpedo} could the other have contributed to sinking of "West Virginia" or "Oklahoma"?
2) As crew apparently scuttled the sub-possibly after sending last message December 8, 1941-would this underwater explosion have been noticed as going on in West Loch?
3) Why would the Salvage crew in 1944 not noticed that among the debris after 1944 explosion was that of a midget submarine-certainly Sakami's sub had been on a exhibit for nearly 3 years! Also the Axis-not the Allies- had midget submarines!! :p

The most troubling question surrounding this sub is that photo.
I watched the Nova show and every time that picture of the sub "surfacing" in the shock wave was shown, it was carefully cropped to omit the Whaleboat close by. This boat was so close, I can't believe no one noticed a sub (as long as a PT boat) surface next to it.
OK, much confusion and noise for distraction? How about a spinning sub prop popping out of the water? When my outboard motor does this, the noise can be heard clear across the lake.
I must admit, when I first heard this theory 10 years ago, I was intrigued, but now it's just sad.

Regarding the small boat which 'past the midget sub's conning tower' in Southeast Loch, see "Torpedoing Pearl Harbor" for the paragraph:

"Viewing the action against Oklahoma and West Virginia, Negishi chose a new target, California, off to the left from the main group of battleships. Both Negishi and his No. 2 wingman, Petty Officer 3rd Class Gunji Kaido, dropped their torpedoes. They almost hit a church launch from (USS) California crossing Southeast Loch from Merry Point."

This text is a translation of "The Search for Five Hirohito's Messengers", MARU, March 1992. http://www.thefreelibrary.com/TORPEDOING+PEARL+HARBOR.-a079586127

Further on that boat:
http://www.pearlharborattacked.com/cgi-bin....=19;t=2
http://www.pearlharborattacked.com/cgi-bin....=44;t=3
http://www.pearlharborattacked.com/cgi-bin....=2;t=10

The wirtnesses on áthe boat ONLY spoke about the aerial torpedo drops coming down around them and the short break in the torpedo launches (before the lagging Kaga torpedo planes arrived) which gave the boat time to vacate that area and head for the "finger piers".
