Hello to all,

I'm a History major at the University of Central Oklahoma, and wish to research the role of the nurses who tended the wounded and dying men during the attack on Pearl Harbor. In particular, I'm interested in locating a list of surviving nurses to see if they would be willing to be interviewed. Does anyone have information along these lines or suggestions as to other possible sources of information about these heroic women?

Hello Kim,

Excellent topic. A good place to start is the Naval Historical Center's website. Under the FAQ section check out the Pearl Harbor attack link. There is a small article on the medical activities of that day and more importantly, source material for you to research further (The United States Navy Medical Department at War, 1941-1945).

Best of luck to you, sounds like a very interesting project and one that has not been explored in great detail.

Aloha All,
Remember that the veterans of the attack on Pearl Harbor are organized. They call this the "Pearl Harbor Survivors Association". To interview anyone about "Pearl Harbor" THAT is the starting point.... especially when you discover they have 'sub-groups' by location, like ship or base... and the nurses are collected into their own sub-group called "White Caps".
