Hello all. I'n new here and am neither an expert or historian on Pearl harbor. I am doing research for a book I am writing. The book is a work of Historical Fiction, based around the events leading to the Attack on Pearl Harbor. I am at the beginning of this process and woulr really appreciate any help you can provide.

My biggest questions at this point are whether it is plausable that Japan could have launched an attack on the US Naval Fleet before Pearl Harbor. From the little bit I have learned, FDR moved the fleet from the west coas in spring of 1940. Could Japan have attacked the fleet before they moved to Pearl Harbor?

I could really use some help with the logistics of this idea. Also to let you know, my initial idea is that involves Hoover Dam and it's involvement with prviding power to the military bases on the West coast. So any ideas there would also be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is sort of a ramble, but this story is in the early stages and kind of loose right now.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

It would depend on a lot of things. You are asking if they could have attacked "the fleet on the west coast" which is sort of a nebulous statement. There were four main centers of fleet activity on the west coast. North-to-south we have Puget Sound (Naval shipyard, Navy Base), San Francisco (Naval Shipyard, Navy Base), Long Beach (Navy Base) and San Diego (Naval shipyard, Navy Base).

No way could they have made a surprise attack on all four of those at the same time even by the time of Pearl Harbor, if you're thinking of things being similar to how they played out at Pearl with the majority of the IJN fleet moving South to the Philippines and Dutch East Indies.

But, It would be posible for them to hit some of the targets and blockade the rest with submarines. I'd say hitting the shipyards in Puget Sound and San Francisco (San Francisco would be a stretch range wise and San Diego is not likely in my opinion) and bottle up the other harbors with subs is your most likely bet.

Let's see what this does...
