I am working up a game scenario, and I am stuck for information.  I am in Afghanistan and all my source books are in New Zealand.  What ships successfully sortied during and after the attack?  Also, did they form with Minneapolis and the DMS that were off-shore?

Thanks,
Chuck Wohlrab

Tracy, nice job on the destroyer information. Hope the following will also help.

SHIP              HULL #    UN.WAY    ENTR. BOUY

BREESE           DM-18     0917        0942
GAMBLE          DM-13     0930        1021
TREVOR          DMS-16   0930        1005
ST. LOUIS       CL-49      0931        1004
WASMUTH       DMS-15   0932        1010
PERRY             DMS-17   0943        1010
ZANE              DMS-14   0946        1000
DETROIT          CL-8       1010        1200
PHOENIX          CL-46     1010-50    1200(APPROX.)
MONTGOMERY   DM-17    1017         1110 (APPROX.)

During and after the attack many ships shifted berths; ie Solace, Neosho and Vestal. Other ships, minesweepers, PT's, smaller auxillaries and numerous yardcraft also got underway to assist the stricken vessels and patrol within the harbor.

Hope this helps some.

Yeah, originally I decided to leave the DMs out but I'm thinking now that I might include them.

A follow-up question.  Which ships actually went in search of the Japanese task force?  I assume it was limited to the cruisers and destroyers.

Hi Chuck,
Where was the Kido Butai on 7 Dec? To send ships, one must have knowledge of where to go...there was nothing.

Yes, the US Army and US Navy sent out reconn aircraft, but the results were dismal at best.
HTH,
David

Aloha David... There were some ships that were sent out looking for "something" though.

USS Minneapolis' action report states she investigated possible contacts southward as directed by Cdr, Task Force 8, and that she joined Task Force 1 after leaving the harbor... so Chuck, you might want to look to see what ships were members of Task Force One, and barring a list, look through all of the action reports to see which ones mention TF 1 or joining Minneapolis.

Tracy,

According to the CINCPAC Diary, PHOENIX, DETROIT, NEW ORLEANS, ST LOUIS, 14 Destroyers and 4 DMs were ordered to join TF 8.  PLus the MINNEAPOLIS and 4 DMS.

ok, I just finished reading CINCPAC's After Action Report of 20 December.

The original plan (pre-7 Dec) was to have TF 1 composed of 2 BatDiv (2 & 4), 1 Cru Div (5), plus DD's.

During 7 Dec  at 1105, those ships that sortied from Pearl were designated TF One (see my above post) and were ordered to report to Commander Task Force 8 (Enterprise's Task Force).  Later was MINNEAPOLIS and the DM's also ordered to join TF 8.
