Hi my name is Amanda, I'm in college right now and we have to do a rhetorical analysis on a few speeches and I picked FDR's Pearl Harbor speech. I was wondering if anyone knew any background info/ important facts behind the speech and the situation around it. I do know a little bit about it, but not much and the internet does not provide a lot on what I am looking for. Pretty much I'm looking for a few questions to be answered the best they can:

1. Does FDR use any rhetorical techniques? What are they?

2. Are there any fallicies in what he is saying?

3. Basic history around his speech. What was also going on at the time related to him and the speech?

Also while looking found this site http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/pearl....rl.html  is this really true or not because it would help greatly if it was.

I think that's it for now, I want to thank anyone right now who can help me out! I really apreciate the help!

Regarding the "WhatReallyHappened" page... that is maintained by Mark Wiley and he has definate opinions that shape how he presents data. Many elements of that page are right, many are wrong, and the wrong ones are spun in a way as to lend false credence to his claims. We'd have to take it on a line-by-line basis, but feel free to ask about individual posts if you would like.

I don't have any information regarding FDR's speech but Aiken-san might.

Konnichiwa Amanda San,
The topic you chose is good. Your study of retorts may find little facts, yet the topic may need to be addressed just to be able to relate what was not.

I was slightly surprised that the piece of paper with all of the major scratch outs and rewording was NOT the one from which he read.

The actual 'smooth copy' speech pages from which he read was not returned to FDR's secretary and she had an investigation of its location without success. Thus the only thing we had were two sources: the recording and the raw proofread version with the many strike-outs.

Decades later, the speech was located in the archives of the US Senate. Now we know that even in the reading of the speech, FDR made ad-libs from what the final 'smooth copy'.

See: FDR speech

As for Mark Wiley Coyote, be aware that half-truth is worse than a lie.

Let us help with your questions...
Cheers,
D. Ai-ken

Thanks so much, this should help a lot. I probably won't use that other site since it is only half-truth, but the speech you gave me should help since it shows where it has been edited and whatnot.

Thanks again!
