Gentlemen,

I have begun researching the events in the Pacific War from 7 December 1941 up through 2 September 1945.

I have started with a copy CINCPAC's War Diary of December 1941 (January-March 1942's is on order) from NARA.

1) Coming across this site (actually, this is my second visit) I remember seeing mention of a book by several individuals on this Forum showing a detailed minute-to-minute account of the attack from both sides.  Does anyone know this book and if its still available to purchse.

2)  With CINCPACs War Diary for December 1941, it actually starts this way:
  a)  There are two time columns on the left hand side of the page, one labeled "GCT" and the other "LCT".  I will assume one is is for Greenwich TIme and the other is local time since there is a 11 1/2 hour difference.  Am I correct?
  b) The diary starts with 0001 GCT (1331 7 Dec LCT).  Does anyone have entries from before 1331 for CINCPAC?

One last question.  I was reading the log entries for the ships and one thing has always puzzled me.
Why is it that the recognized time the attacked started is 0755 when the ship logs state it was much earlier than that.

I hope someone can help.

Aloha Craig,
The forty volumes from Congress includes the CINCPAC's War Diary of December 1941 and MANY more records. That may open your eyes wide.

Ah, the times given in the ships' logs do NOT assure us that the attack started 'much earlier' than 0755. There is a HUGE variation in the logs.

The "Prep Flag" raising was a significant event that occured at 0755. The harbor came to a halt, as the ships prepared to raise the National Flag at 0800. The harbor came under attack at 0755.

The attack at Wheeler was at 0751...and Kaneohe NAS ans Ewa Mooring Mast Field were hit at 0753.

The US Navy survivors out numbered the rest of the survivors, so 0755 became the PHSA 'official' time for the beginning of the attack for their membership requirements.

The half hour difference between the LOCAL time in 1941 versus 0755 TODAY...is forgotten...and 0755 TODAY is when the memorial services begin each 7 Dec.

Hope this helps begin your reading pleasure in the study of 'two hours'.

David,

It seems your the person I need to talk to.

Can you recommend any books or papers so I can get the latest information about the attack. (assuming that this inforation corrects what has already been published).

Hint:  I have the annual summary battle damage report that BuShips put own and it shows the ARIZONA being hit by 5 bombs and one torpedo.

Regards,

Craig

You're going to need a variety of sources, and you'll have to accept that there are some discrepancies we may never be able to  resolve.

Ship's log times may differ wildly as in some cases events may have been filled out after the fact.

I would recommend "At Dawn We slept" as much for the bibliography and footnotes as anything, and "Pearl Harbor Papers: inside the Japanese Plans."

In regards to Arizona, "Seven Seconds to Infamy" is about as current as it gets.

Thanks gentlemen,

I do have another question.

I know its not related to Pearl Harbor, but it is related to the Pacific Fleet.

I would like to know where I put notices up about releases of the CINCPAC War Diary?

You see, I'm planning to scan the pages of each month and convert them into pdf files.

All of these months are available from the National Archives, but gawd are they expensive.  So I figured I could charge a small fee for each month.  SO far the largest (late 1942's at 1,000 EACH), would cost about $23.00 plus shipping (compared to paying $500 to the Archives).

Can anyone help?

Regards,

Craig
