For the time being part of it is posted at http://www.historynet.com/magazines/mhq/8556452.html

"Escape From Pearl Harbor" by Michael Olson is an extract of a book released in 2007 titled Tales from a Tin Can: The USS Dale from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay.

This piece covers the action seen by USS Dale, DD-353, and her crew the morning and days after the attack. Moored at X-15 on Sunday morning with Monaghan, Farragut, and Aylwin, Dale was one of the ships to make her way through and then clear of the harbor during the attack.

While the veteran stories are great to read, there are some error that the reader should be aware of.

The biggest, and first, is the statement that Dale was the first ship out of the harbor during the attack. She was actually beat by at least two Destroyers, Helm at 0817 and Patterson at 0900, before she herself cleared the channel at 0907. Monaghan and Blue followed her out at one minute intervals.

It states later that "within the first two minutes of the attack, all of the battleships along battleship row had taken hits from dive bombers," which is very badly wrong. I'll let David Aiken comment further on this aspect as I'd probably get details wrong too!

Good find Tracy!
I shall relish the 'read'!

Ah, the quotation which you call to my attention indeed has a problem: "within the first two minutes of the attack, all of the battleships along battleship row had taken hits from dive bombers," áThis is a common thought among veterans of that day.

"...within the first two minutes of the attack..." is when nine SHOKAKU D3A (ie: the "dive bombers") flew parallel to BB Row (as shown in the PHHA Brochure artwork by Bob Bracci) then hit the southwestern end of Ford Island...at NAS Pearl Harbor's PBYs....while the rest of the SHOKAKU D3As attacked Hickam Field. During the first wave [approximately 0755-0830 for the harbor area], the D3As were assigned to attack airfields. The Zuikaku D3As attacked Wheeler Field at 0751.

The first wave attack on US ships in the harbor were by the B5N "attack" bombers, later known as KATEs. These were divided into two phases...high-level and torpedo. The torpedo units came first and were over within eleven minutes. The high-level units gave the torpedo units about eight minutes to do their job before raining their own ordnance onto Battleship Row. The final torpedo hit onto BB Row (on USS Oklahoma) is revealed in a high-level strike photo showing hits near and on the aft portion of USS Arizona!

In many witness' minds, the nine SHOKAKU dive bombers flying down BB Row prior to the attack onto NAS PEARL...gave rise to the suggested quotation in many texts.
